In this lecture class, we will discuss how a tree grows, how it is harvested, and how it is milled into lumber than can then be used to construct various projects.
Description
We will be discussing how a tree grows, how growth rings can be read to determine the best way to mill a log (cant) into lumber. We will discuss various sawing techniques that will produce different grain structures for different purposes, for example: Plain Sawn, Rift Sawn, Quarter Sawn and Live Sawn. Lastly, we will discuss how to mill the rough lumber from the mill into usable lumber for their purposes.
